What’s the difference between memoir and autobiography?

On The Athena Wellness Podcast I explained these terms can be confusing because they are often interchanged.

Firstly, an autobiography captures a full life story.

So details, events, feelings, lessons, struggles and highlights about all periods of life, plus perhaps background about parents and grandparents.

However, a memoir targets one facet or time of a complete life such as childhood, war, career, travel, etc.

Meanwhile, a biography is a life account written by another person.

What are some elements of good storytelling for The Athena Wellness Podcast listeners?

I encouraged The Athena Wellness Podcast listeners to pause before they start a life story.

In short, take a moment to decide who it is for and why you want to continue.

For example, your ‘why’ might be to convey basic facts, satisfy your soul or leave a lasting legacy.

Next focus on telling a good story truthfully and add themes, which are your project’s guiding messages.

How might someone begin to organise and create a family story?

I told The Athena Wellness Podcast listeners that getting organised was all about planning.

First be clear on what you want to write, why and the audience.

Then make a writing schedule, identify a writing space and seek out accountability.

Next brainstorm memories and be confident in your abilities to create!
