Writing at home is an escape

I find writing at home during COVID-19 quarantine helps me escape.

That is to say my regular writing time is great for switching off from the TV news, newspapers, websites and social media.

Even for a long-time journo like me, I find consuming blanket news coverage about the pandemic plays on my fears and worries.

Therefore life-story writing at home helps me to forget what is going on in the world for just a moment.

Importantly it gives me a chance to redirect all my energy to something positive and lasting.

Rediscover happy memories

Writing at home can lift your spirits.

To clarify, writing about the past can transport you to happier more joyful times.

With the stroke of a pen or key you can travel back and re-live memories.

For example, one minute we are confined in our home and the next we are writing about a childhood camping adventure, the excitement of a wedding day, or opening the doors of a new business venture.

In short, writing gives you a solid reason to re-visit memories that will make you and your reader smile.

Reconnect from home

The final reason why writing at home can help during quarantine is connections.

By this I mean, writing encourages you to get in touch with friends, family and others.

Get in contact by phone or video call to ask their take on key events and memories.

Are their recollections the same, similar or different to yours?

Likewise, help a loved one write a life-story feature article or book.

You can do this by setting up a one-off remote interview or by making interviews weekly events to look forward to.

I held weekly phone interviews with my grandmother Bonnie over several months to help her write her autobiography.

To sum up, life-story writing connects you with your family and friends in deep and life-affirming ways.
