Celebrating family on the We Turned Out Okay podcast

A discussion with child expert Karen Lock Kolp about Your Family Stories and preserving family legacy

Last week I had the great honour of appearing on the We Turned Out Okay: The modern parent’s guide to old-school parenting podcast as its episode 200 guest!

The popular American parenting podcast was founded and is hosted by Karen Lock Kolp M.Ed. to help parents understand their young kids and be happier at home.

Karen is an expert in child development and also runs the Ninja Parenting Community, a place where she helps parents “solve their toughest challenges every day”.

She had me on the show to talk about my new book Your Family Stories: Easily capture your loved ones’ memories for future generations and to inspire her listeners to record family life stories and memories this Christmas and holiday season.

“It is fitting that this particular episode is with a guest who specializes in helping families tell stories – really, in helping people preserve their family legacies,” Karen said.

“Nicola, mom, biographer, and journalist, has hit upon an idea that really resonated with me, so I know it will resonate with you: engaging our parents and grandparents to tell their stories, and to get your kids involved for a multigenerational understanding of where we come from, and how we got here.”

Karen is a gifted professional storyteller and during our chat we talked about her own family history, how in her youth she returned to the Italian town where her grandfather was born and raised before he moved overseas, and how special it was to later share these memories with him in person and in Italian!

I also share my personal story and inspiration behind the book plus offer up autobiography tips including; using the senses to tap into memories, the power of establishing emotional connections with your audience, and key reasons why YOUR story matters.

It was such a blast being on the show (and juggling time zones!).

I’m sure you are going to enjoy listening.

You can catch the podcast here (my interview starts after the extended intro at the 27-minute mark).

Happy writing!

I hope these writing tips will keep you moving steadily towards finishing your memoirs. Please let me know what you think of the podcast! I always love hearing what works for different people. Drop me an email.
